The Beast were such a late addition to the 1997-98 schedule that their game jerseys weren't ready for the start of the season.
As a result, they wore these white jerseys for their first seven games as well as during the pre-season.
(Side Note: The Hartford Wolf Pack did something similar for the same reasons in 1997.)

Worn in pre-season. Nycholat was never called-up to the Capitals during the regular season after being injured while playing for the Hershey Bears.
Later in season, when the Caps acquired Dave Hannan, he took number 23 and Nycholat was assigned number 36 and number 38.
