Shortened fight strap. This is the only set they wore with red numbers -- Set 2 from this season has a different style and featured white numbers.

The Beast were such a late addition to the 1997-98 schedule that their game jerseys weren't ready for the start of the season.
As a result, they wore these white jerseys for their first seven games as well as during the pre-season.
(Side Note: The Hartford Wolf Pack did something similar for the same reasons in 1997.)
